FIV (Fecundación in vitro)

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) literally means ‘fertilization in the laboratory’. It is precisely this: to fertilize the egg outside the woman’s body, in the laboratory.

his was possible for the first time in 1978. The couple formed by John and Lesley Brown had been unsuccessfully trying for years to conceive. They sought advice with Dr. Steptoe, who diagnosed an obstruction of the tubes. At the time it was not possible to do any treatment for Mrs. Brown to become pregnant with this problem.  
However, Dr. Steptoe had been working with Dr. Edwards, a colleague from the University of Cambridge, for years. Dr. Steptoe used laparoscopy to obtain eggs from women and Dr. Edwards tried their fertilization in the laboratory. After many failed attempts, finally the process succeeded. It was with John and Lesley Brown. The happy ending of this story was the birth of Louise Brown. This was a global event (it was the cover of the Time magazine).
Since then, thousands of children have been born all over the world thanks to the In Vitro Fertilization.
